イタリアのミラノといえば先ず頭に浮かぶ建築としてはこのDOUMO（イタリア式に発音すればドゥオモ)を思い浮かべる方が多いのではないでしょうか。
1386年（14世紀末）にビスコンティ家のGian Galeazzo Viscontiによって建設が始まり、400年以上の歳月をかけて完成したイタリアンゴシックを代表する大聖堂です。尖塔の頂上にはミラノのシンボルとして金のマリア像が置かれています。
ドゥオモの前にある広場（Piazza Duomo）、ここはかつてミラノ市民が集まって様々な議論をする場でした。今でも夕方時になると広場周辺で老若交々に集まって議論する風景がよく見られます。（ミラノ在住の知人曰く、話題はたいてい贔屓のサッカーチーム、F1レース、そして政治！の３つのどれかとのことです。）

The Duomo(Cathedral)began in 1386 by Gian Gareazzo
Visconti,is the supreme expression of Gothic architecture in Italy.
The golden Madonnina(statue of the Madonna)at its summit is the symbol of
the city.
You can find the magnificent atrium inside this basilica.
ドゥオモに面して左右に広がるのが、かつての王宮（PALAZZO
REALE)と今や日本でもすっかり有名なビットリオエマヌエル2世アーケード（Galleria
Vittolio Emanuelle II)です。
To the left and right of Piazza Duomo(Central Square of Milan) are respectively,the
Palazzo Reale(Royal Palace) and the Gallery of Victor Emmanuel II,classic
meeting place for Milanese with its world-famous cafes, restaurants and
shops,also its beautiful Mosaic pavement.
回りのショップに目がゆきがちですが、ぜひ足元に目を向けてください！アーケードの舗装は見事な大理石モザイクで仕上げられています。
この大理石モザイクはイタリアの伝統的技法で、まず最初に原画を原寸大の型紙に拡大して現場で施工しやすいサイズに分割し、特別なハンマーを使って1cm程度の小片に砕いた大理石を接着剤を使って型紙に張り付け、現場に施工後型紙を取り除くという根気の入る作業を繰り返して完成します。本当にいつまでも眺めていたい気持ちにさせます。この緻密で美しい仕事には感心せざるを得ません。
The pavement of the gallery is the incredibly wonderful art of "Mosaico
di Marmo= Marble Mosaic" very traditional decoration that is still
succeeded to today in Italy .
Starting with making original designed pattern then it is enlarged to the
real size of paper which can be constructed in the actual place.
Then small (around less 1cm x 1cm)pieces of marbles are fitted carefully on the paper by skills using special glue which will be removed after the construction.
I can not but admire this Art of precise pavement!
